The van rental industry in the UK is huge with thousands of people each choosing to hire a van to suit a specific need. There is plenty of choice when looking for a van to rent, not just from the number of companies on offer but the range of van sizes and types and the flexible hire terms which can range from a few hours to a few months.

Types of vans available for rent

Choosing a van for rent will depend on your requirement for the van. Vans come in all shapes and sizes to suit a range of purposes and most company fleets will have a van to suit.

Renting a small van can be perfect for carrying tools to a job or picking up a bought item from a store such as a washer or cooker. Common small vans are the Ford Connect, the Vauxhall Combo and the VW Caddy, these vans are generally the cheapest to rent and are no bigger than a medium sized car, making them easy to handle.

Medium sized vans are common for small items of furniture and are often used in short distance house moves. The most common medium size van on the market is the SWB Ford Transit and most van rental companies will have these models in their fleet. A step up from the small wheel base transit is the long wheel base transit which handles much the same as the smaller model but gives the customer extra space for storing goods.

Anyone looking for a van for rent to move home will be well served by a large van such as a Mercedes Sprinter, Transit Jumbo or Luton van. These vans are the vehicle of choice for many house removal companies and used regularly as delivery vans. The Mercedes Sprinter is also widely used by carpet fitters as it is the perfect length for transporting carpets on the roll. Large vans such as those mentioned will give around four metres of load space; the Luton has the extra benefit of being a box van giving extra room. The Luton is a popular model with many manufacturers and comes with the choice of an optional tail-lift which is beneficial for loading and un-loading heavy items.

Self-drive or with driver van rental

When looking for a van to rent you will be generally be met with the option of self-drive or ‘with driver’. The option of a van hire with a driver is normally reserved for larger vehicles such as Luton’s or 7.5 tonne vans. This option can be beneficial when renting for a house move and take some of the stress out of the job.

The self-drive option is the most common and is available on all sized vans. Self-drive will give you the freedom to use the van as a when you choose and will be open to more flexible rental terms.
